Since any attempt to understand the disability of such patients depends on these, we have attempted a further investigation into the changes occurring during exercise. This paper deals with the hemodynamics, and a following communication is concerned with ventilatory and metabolic aspects (Gazetopoulos and Davies, 1966).

Contrast Enhanced Echocardiography for Detection of Intrapulmonary Shunts in Liver Transplant Candidates

Background: Intrapulmonary vascular abnormalities associated with liver cirrhosis may result in intrapulmonary right-to-left shunt and hypoxemia. The aim of this study was to use contrast enhanced echocardiography to detect intrapulmonary vascular abnormalities in patients with liver cirrhosis candidates for liver transplantation. Methods: One hundred and two adult patients underwent contrast e...

Hemodynamic and Ventilatory Effects of Exercise in the Upright Position in Patients with Left-to-right Shunts.

THE behavior of the pulmonary vascular resistance during exercise in patients with ventricular septal defect or patent ductus arteriosus influences the magnitude and direction of tlhe shunt of blood across the defect and also may provide clues concerning the genesis of the pulmonary hypertension often seen in large defects. In previous studies,1' 2 pulmonary artery wedge pressure had not been d...

Effects of Right Sidelying Respiratory Left Adductor Pull Back Exercise on Improving Hip Biomechanics in Participants With a Tendency to Stand on Right Side

Objectives: A functional helpful exercise that tends to correct postural unevenness and endeavours to re-establish lumbo-pelvic mechanics would appear to be beneficial for patients with postural impairment. This study evaluated the effects of right sidelying respiratory left adductor pull back exercise on improving hip biomechanics in participants with a tendency to stand on right side. Method...

Ventilatory Capacity and Exercise Ventilation in Congenital and Acquired Cardiac Disease.

In some forms of cardiac disease an abnormally high ventilatory response to exercise contributes to the production of disability and impairment of exercise tolerance (Campbell, 1934). In this paper we record the results of a standardized exercise test, relating ventilatory response to the work done, in a series of 163 patients with congenital and acquired cardiac disease. The findings are consi...

Cardiovascular abnormalities following surgery for left-to-right shunts. Observations in atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects, and patent ductus arteriosus.

SUMMARY Seventy-two patients with left-to-right shunts were studied an average of 5 years after operation. Persistent residual shunts occurred in 24 of the 72 patients and were unsuspected clinically in 11. While significant residual shunts were usually suspected in the group with ventricular septal defects (VSD), residual shunts in the group with atrial septal defects (ASD) were frequently uns...
